BIOGRAPHIE ARTWORK-ANDINO DIAZ YOANYS
Guided both by my own experience as a child and by the observation of my students in fine arts, “Imaginary Journey” is the result of my introspection in the dream world of Cuban children.
Cuba, considered by many of us as a kind of “Neverland” seems to cross time and space without much concern. It is undoubtedly the ideal place where reality and fiction can coexist in harmony. The borders between them being minimal, it is not strange that my art work has a surreal influence. In addition, my paintings carry the codes, references and symbols of what represents freedom, dreams and the desire to go beyond what reality can impose on us.
Behind the images portrayed as if it were books for children, a slightly less naive universe takes shape. The spirit of Cuban children torn between their duty towards the Fatherland (wearing the uniform, singing revolutionary songs, hating the United States, a whole range of homework and the prohibited) and their dreams; having toys, eating good things or going on a trip. At least in their imagination …
From academic painting, he kept the precise outline and the depth on which a modern surrealism came to be superimposed whose codes and variations allow him to move towards a modern abstraction. Yoanys Andino Diaz soaks up the atmosphere in which he moves. In Cuba, paintings with a clear iconographic dimension and large format texts to grab the viewer. His last exhibition, a series entitled “Couleurs de Suisse“, gives life to a different context through an abstract, synthetic and controlled line. Research reflecting a turning point in his work and a new pictorial maturity.
Yoanys Andino Diaz was born on July 27, 1982 in the city of Manzanillo in Cuba. He began to study art through drawing, painting and sculpture at the age of ten, in “the house of culture”.
At the age of sixteen, he entered the “El ALBA” art school in Holguín. He perfected academic drawing and painting there. After his studies, he returned to his hometown and became a professor of drawing and academic painting at the Carlos Enriquez art school. In 2004, 2005 and 2007, he hung his paintings at the salon of October 10 in the Carlos Enriques Art Gallery in Manzanillo.
Yoanys Andino Diaz’s painting does not correspond to any current style of contemporary painting. He uses elements of the Academy while deconstructing through his painting the classic model. It is a new aesthetic that he proposes linked to a dreamlike universe in which surreal characters intrude.
In 2009, he arrived in Switzerland and began studying at the HEAD in Geneva.
Geneva is a new start. He begins a pictorial journey, made of observations, sensations and a world in which solid roots, growing trunks and branches come to life. Metaphorical figures which echo Nietzsche’s words “for the branches of the tree to reach heights, its roots must be anchored in the darkest and deepest lands”
Symbols and pigments
The school uniforms of Cuban childhood, the paper boat and its journey to the extreme and the eagle are all symbols participating in the political context of Cuba. Everyday life, dreams, power: raw materials that combine, intertwine and come to life from palette to canvas. The colors impose themselves on the painter – the blue of the sky charged with hope, the red of blood having spread for freedom, the white of peace, of silence, the greens of the horizons – furtive touches of his real environment and cultural. Added to this is the melancholy, as in this representation of the “painting with the child holding the paper boat in his mouth, like a game”, where characters from Greek mythology are invited.
