Yoanys Andino Diaz: Imaginary Journeys – 2009
“Imaginary Journey” is the fruit of a deep reflection on the dreamlike world of Cuban children — a world shaped by both my own memories as a child and my experiences as a visual arts teacher.
To many of us, Cuba feels like a sort of Neverland, a place suspended in time and space, where reality and fiction blend effortlessly. The boundary between both is so thin that it’s only natural my paintings have taken on a surreal quality.
They carry the signs and symbols of freedom, dreams, and a desire to reach beyond what reality often allows.
Behind these seemingly innocent, storybook-like images, lies a deeper layer — a world where Cuban children live caught between duty to the Homeland (wearing uniforms, singing revolutionary songs, being taught to reject the United States…) and their simple dreams of toys, good food, or the chance to travel — even if only in their imagination.
